Burj Al Arab – the eighth wonder?

The Burj Al Arab (Arabic word, literally meaning the Tower of the Arabs) is a luxury hotel located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Burj Al Arab is managed by the Jumeirah Group. It was designed by British architect Tom Wright of WS Atkins PLC. Designed to resemble a billowing sail, the hotel soars to a height of 321 meters, dominating the Dubai coastline.
At night, it offers an unforgettable sight, surrounded by choreographed color sculptures of water and fire. This all-suite hotel reflects the finest that the world has to offer. As its website describes it, “Burj Al Arab is located in the Jumeirah Beach area of Dubai, 15 km. from the main city centre and 25 km. from Dubai International Airport. It is well served by taxis and has its own fleet of 10 chauffeurs driven Rolls-Royces. It stands proudly on a man-made island some 280m. Offshore and is linked to the mainland by a slender, gently curving causeway.
To cross the causeway, however, you need a reservation at the hotel. Casual visitors are not admitted, and reservations - even for a meal - require almost as much advance notice as they do cash. The Teflon-coated hotel is brilliant white during a sunny day, but takes on an entirely different look at night. Computer programmed spotlights create a changing tableau of colors on the white facade. The Burj Al Arab is an all-suite hotel. There are 202 double-floor suites. Each is sumptuously decorated and equipped with high-tech devices.
The Burj Al Arab suite windows stretch floor to ceiling, offering grand sea and land views. Each suite has its own private butler. The hotel is significantly taller than it appears to the eye. The Burj Al Arab’s streamlined shape and its double floor design help create the optical illusion. To grasp the Burj Al Arab’s height, imagine the 102 floor Empire State Building standing next to the Burj Al Arab, which is just 16% shorter.
