Bringing Home the New Baby: Tips to Prepare the Older Siblings

When a child is born or going to be born, it is great feeling for the mother and father, as everybody is overjoyed. But one person who feels left out in all this celebration of joy is the older child who feels nervous about the changes a new baby brings. Here are some tips to prepare your older child about the soon to be born baby or the newborn baby.
Tip 1: Parents should prepare the older child for the impending change by involving him/her in the welcoming the unborn. Show him/her the ultrasound of the unborn; let him/her feel the belly when the baby moves. Whenever getting a present for the baby, get one for the older child also. This will make him/her feel that he/she is not neglected.
Tip 2: Spend extra time with your older child, let him/her know that you love him/her, and reassure the older child that he/she will still be a loved one even after the new baby arrives.
Tip 3: Give your older child something to show, that he/she is now a big brother/sister. Things like a t-shirt, an image of the unborn; even his/her photos when he/she was a baby will reduce the tension. Show him/her the photos when they were in their mother’s belly.
Tip 4: Make special notes with pictures of older children and keep them at a place the older kid interacts with the new kid. Let the older child hold the little sibling, take a picture of both of them. This will surely help break the ice.
Tip 5: Answer their questions as many times until he/she feels satisfied. Clearing the doubt will help the older child to accept the change.
Tip 6: Involve your older child in sifting through their old baby clothes and furniture, and let them decide what the new baby could use. Letting them shop for themselves and the newborn will reduce jealousy.
Tip 7: Share your excitement with your older child and let them touch and talk with the baby whenever they wanted. Keeping them close will break a lot of barriers.
Tip 8: Read books for moms and dads on how to help the older child, let the older child read books for soon-to-be big brother or sister.
Tip 9: Send your kid to places where they can mix with other kids who may have siblings. Let them mix with the sibling of these kids.
