Breast cancer treatments
February 27, 2009
The moment we hear the word “cancer”, a sense of fear enters our minds. It seems like a death knell ringing. Until a few years ago, this was true. However, with the present day advent in science and especially medicine in this area, cancer, even breast cancer does not need to spell fear for us.
There are several treatments available for breast cancer, and effective ones, too. Therefore, read on to find out more about these treatments and to set your heart at rest as far as breast cancer is concerned.
Local or regional treatment
As the name suggests, this treatment is of lymph nodes that are in the specific area that surrounds the breast and the even the breast itself. If the presence of the disease is seen, then those particular areas are treated accordingly.
The treatment can involve radiation or radiotherapy and/or surgery. Radiation is used to eliminate cancer cells out of the affected area and chances are that they will not return. The other method is surgery, and usually it is seen as the ultimate measure. The entire breast or a part of it is removed. It is referred to a mastectomy and several cases require reconstruction post surgery, although, it is not as extreme as it once was.
Systemic treatments
The basis of this treatment is the fact that our body is a system. Chemotherapy is a widely used systemic treatment. Chemotherapy is used to attack and destroy any cancer cells that are there in the breast and also dividing rapidly. However, it can be harsh to your body because, besides the cancer cells, there are other cells that are also dividing. As a result, it can be quite sickening; however, the fact is that it does work.
One more such treatment is the use of tamoxifen. It helps to decrease the risk of recurrence of breast cancer, post surgery. Although the side effects, like blood clots, uterine cancer, early menopause, hot flushes, nausea, weight gain, depression and energy loss, can make it undesirable.
Alternative treatments
Some alternative treatments consider the mind, spirit and body as one and treat accordingly. We are yet to know more about the effectiveness or safety of these treatments.
Relaxation techniques, meditation, acupuncture and aromatherapy are among several other treatments. These treatments can be considered to be more of being complementary as against being the sole treatments.
However, with all of these treatments, breast cancer does not have to strike terror in our minds
