Beach Volleyball

Although it shares the same name, beach volleyball is very different from volleyball played on the court. A lot of people assume that if they are good at playing volleyball on the court, they will then be good at playing volleyball on the sand, this is just not so.
One of the biggest differences between beach volleyball and volleyball on the court is the number of people playing in a game. In professional beach volleyball there are only two person teams on opposing sides. If you are just playing for fun and recreation, you can have nine players as in court volleyball, but the pros only have two person teams. This of course makes the play that much more difficult. Instead of having the bump, set and pass done by three people, you have to make it work with only two.
In addition to the more challenging play due to lack of numbers on your side of the net, there is also different rules and a whole different level of play. Beach volleyball requires a very different skill level and uses different muscles. You have to be able to move a lot faster, jump and be strong enough to power a spike from the middle of your side of the court. It truly is a sport that requires a very astute level of agility and speed.
The sand tends to slow the players down, it is not possible to run and move as quickly through sand as it is on a flat surface like a court, not to mention that with only two people on a team you have to do a lot of the work that you usually rely on your teammates for.
The muscle strength it takes to play beach volleyball is also a lot more challenging. You use different muscle groups and move them in a different way than on a court. Professionals that do this for a living and competition practice for years before they are ready to compete. It takes years of doing drills, muscle building and hard work to be able to vie for a spot in the leaders’ board in beach volleyball.
Going for the ball in beach volleyball takes incredible stamina and learning to predict when and where the ball is going to fall on your side of the court takes a lot of work and practice. It is not just fun in the sun to those who take beach volleyball seriously; in fact it is a highly competitive and skilled game.
