October 20, 2009
During pregnancy, the hormone level changes and that causes many changes in the physical factors and the mental aspects of the woman. It can cause many discomfort and can even cause a change of mood.
Some of these factors, if not properly regulated, may even affect the fetus. These are all natural factors, which are not in the control of the woman; but there are some factors, which are within the control of the pregnant woman.
In the interest of the child in her womb, she has to control and regulate some of these habits. We will briefly discuss them here:
Smoking: There are statutory warnings that ‘smoking cigarette is injurious to health’. This is a warning given all over the world. In spite of these warnings, many pregnant women smoke.
Smoking during pregnancy is certainly injurious for the health of the fetus. The smoke that is inhaled causes decrease in the supply of oxygen to the baby.
It may lead to miscarriage, still – birth, morning sickness and even bleeding. It may also result in high blood pressure, reduction of weight at birth, premature birth and SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome).
Alcohol: This is dangerous than smoking. Alcohol can affect the health of the baby in the womb. In addition, as in smoking it may result in still – birth, miscarriage, low birth weight, etc. Another dangerous result of alcohol is behavioral abnormalities and the baby may develop craving for alcohol or drugs in later life.
Drugs and other remedies: Many times drugs and any other herbal remedies may not be conducive for the health of the woman or the child. It is a recommendation that whatever medicines you take should be only under the strict supervision and guidance of the physician.
Exercise: The pregnant must undertake exercises like walking, swimming and other physical exercises. However, there is a word of caution! The exercises should be only as per the advice of the physician. Do not exert too much.
The exercise should reduce as the woman comes near the labor date. The woman should take nutritious foods like vegetables, fruits etc. She must be in constant communication with the physician and take his advice as and when required.
Pregnancy before 15 years of age and after 35 years is dangerous. So pregnant in this age group should exercise more caution.
