Baby essentials
July 20, 2009
This is a list of baby essentials that one will need when you are expecting a baby. They are listed by activity and cover all the basic things a baby will require.
Bedding related
The baby will likely spend a better part of his/her first few months sleeping. It is therefore prudent to make it as comfortable as possible for him/her. Buy a crib that later converts into a toddler bed along with a soft, sturdy, and durable mattress.
Crib liners provide padding around the corners of the crib. A few fitted bed sheets and a comfortable blanket will be required. Pillows are not required for small babies. A night lamp, crib mobile, and a basket to store extra clothing, burp cloths, and diapers for night sessions is a good idea.
Changing related
A baby changing station is essential- these are mostly available as a set along with the crib. A changing station at the right height and with the advantage of a few drawers and shelves will help store some extra clothes, diapers, diaper rash cream, wipes, wipes warmer, baby burp cloths, wash clothes, and medication.
Bathing related
A small baby tub that converts to a toddler tub can be purchased. Washcloths, baby soap, and a few towels are essential. Some toys that can add entertainment value to the bathing ritual like rubber ducks can be purchased as well.
Feeding related
Since most babies are initially breast fed, extra pillows and breastfeeding support pillows for the back are recommended. As the kids start solids, spoons, bowls, high chair, an assortment of bibs, bottles, cups, and forks are required.
If there is a paucity of space, you may opt for a booster seat that can be attached to a regular dining chair. Baby food either store bought or pureed at home is a good option for young babies starting out on solid food.
Play area & other items
It will be a good idea to designate a place for the child to play and have a quiet time by himself/herself. This can be a whole room by itself or a portion of a room. His/her toys and bed may be arranged in the room.
The other useful things to consider are a car seat to take the child along while travelling. A good stroller to take the child out in and a playpen that can be taken from room to room to keep the child within watching distance.
