January 29, 2009
Did you ever suffer from a headache which you swore was because you were getting sick or stomach and back pain, which occurred due to no reason, but you were sure that you were sick? Well this is Hypochondria, a complex name for a complex situation.
Well, many psychiatrists have come to the conclusion, after under taking several studies, that most of the time, it is all in the head. Only 16% of the patients have physiological causes behind this ailment. For the other 84% it’s all in the head and they are usually told to take aspirin or Tylenol. The main reason for this aliment is stress related.
Most of the symptoms are caused by stress, the mind and the attitude of that person. As an example, take a person who comes to the doctor with a symptom of depression. Does he have a psychiatric disorder or medical disorder? It’s difficult for the doctors to know without a medical work up.
This problem occurs with the stress in one’s life. The stress changes the person’s mood and his attitude towards life. This change in the mind causes ailment in the body due to stress. The person then starts to believe that something is wrong with his health and the doctors cannot diagnose it. Finally, he comes to the conclusion that the doctors are wrong and he is going to die for sure. More stress and thus more illness on the way. Here is how a person can break free from this aliment:
1. Accept the unacceptable: You must accept that nothing is wrong with you and the doctors are giving you the right advice. Although it is difficult for a hypochondriac to accept, make efforts to convince yourself that it’s the mind doing this to your body.
2. Change your attitude: Now that you have accepted the fact that it’s your mind that is behind all the trouble, start changing your attitude on the important issues in your life that are causing you all the stress. Try to find out the solutions for them. The key is being optimistic.
3. Alter your wardrobe: Go shopping, change your dressing style and become a new person. By doing so, you will change your sense of self worth.
4. Upgrade your activity level: Exercises help in decreasing the level of stress hormones. Thus this will help you relax.
Remember the key word is change. Until and unless you change your outlook, way of living and other things, you will never be able to come out of the problem. So remember to change and for the better.
