Are You a Food Addict
December 19, 2008
Everybody likes to eat. We need to eat to survive. Most of us know when to stop, but unfortunately, some do not. Food addiction can cause many problems like obesity and diabetes to name a couple. The causes of food addiction are complicated but read on to find out more about this habit.
It might sound surprising , but there are different types of food addictions. Certain food addictions are for specific kind of foods only. Foods like coffee and tea contain caffeine, while sugar and chocolate are addictive because they contain addictive stimulants.
Opoid foods like dairy and grain products – pasta, chips, bread and starch-rich foods - contain addictive peptides, opoids that cause production of exorphins. These exorphins cause cravings, increased appetite and addiction.
Sometimes, specific allergies may be the reason the person is unable to control his eating urges. Such allergenic foods cause production of an addictive substance called opoid enkephalin.
Women may become addicted to some foods because of a number of mood disorders. Here the addict seeks comfort in the food he/she eats.
Symptoms
Just like any addiction, you can recognize this one, too. There are certain symptoms characteristic of food addicts. The most common and obvious of all symptoms is weight gain.
Check your frequency of eating. See if you have unusually high food cravings.
Observe if you get hungry after eating certain foods. Those may be allergenic.
Check if you show withdrawal symptoms.
Anxiety, irritability when hungry, long -term malnutrition, and fatigue are some more symptoms to look out for.
You can overcome this addiction
The best way to avoid addiction is to stay away from it. Avoid eating foods that are naturally addictive. Foods like coffee, tea, sugar, and chocolate will not take long to become a habit and then an addiction. So eat these foods, but in moderate proportions.
You need to observe well how your body reacts after eating. After having a certain food, if you feel hungrier, then know that it is allergenic food. Next time around, you will know better and avoid it.
Get rid of your bad eating habits. Learn to stop when you know you have had enough. Avoid the habit of overeating.
Seeking comfort in food will get you nowhere. So deal with your problem. Face it like an adult and seek professional help if you have to, but get over it.
Finally, it is important that you face the fact that you have an addiction and move on from there. Be strong in your certainty that it can be overcome.
