When children get sick, it is a terrible time for parents especially mothers. The sleepless nights and the time taken off work add up to the stress. There is the need to give medicines to treat the sickness. There are a lot of over the counter medicines today. But the question is whether they are safe. There are some facts mothers should know about medicines.
All medicines are harmful.
Some people will say that since a particular medicine was prescribed it is not harmful. The truth is that all medicines are poisonous and can be dangerous if not taken according to instruction, especially in high doses. Before you buy any medicine for your child, talk to your chemist about the child’s symptoms.
The plastic spoon and the teaspoon are not the same.
When you lose the plastic measuring spoon that comes with the medicine, don’t think you can replace it with the normal teaspoon. The normal teaspoon varies in size ranging from 4ml to 9ml. The medicine spoon is designed to hold 5ml. You may overdose or under dose the child by doing that substitution.
Coughs and cold need two medicines.
Too many medicines are dangerous for your child. Beware of that. When your child gets cough and cold, the best thing to do is to give him paracetamol syrup to relieve the symptoms. The cough and cold clears by itself. Don’t give cough medicine and then cold medicine. That does not mean many medicines cannot be taken at the same time; you must see a health professional first and follow their instruction.
Half dose of adult pain killer is not equal to normal dose of infant pain killer.
This kind of guessing is risky. Children should not be given adult medicine. It is not made for them. Certain common drugs like aspirin can only be taken from the age of 16 years.
Not all medicine make children sleep.
Some medicine can keep your child awake so don’t think by giving him medicine before bedtime you make him sleep better. Find things like this out from your chemist.
Don’t keep on giving the same medicine for a long time if the symptoms still persist. In that case see a doctor. Keep all medicines away from the reach of children.
