Antibiotics and pregnancy

It is a well known fact that infections usually happen to a lady when she is pregnant. In order to treat them the most common measure used by most of the women is the use of the antibiotics. The most prone areas for infection are the reproductive or the urinary tracts. Infection in these sensitive areas can even harm the baby and that is the reason why they should be cured. Mostly women use antibiotics in order to treat these as well as other infections at the time of pregnancy. However the point that is of concern and which is not known to most of the people is that these antibiotics are sometimes not required and in some cases they are harmful as well for the child as well the pregnant baby.
The most common infection that happens in most of the pregnant ladies is the cold, which is also known as the infection of the upper respiratory. One thing that is quite important to note that these infections are mainly caused by the viruses and those viruses are not at all susceptible or curable by the antibiotics. So why people use antibiotics in cold? Perhaps because of ignorance!
It is often seen that in several occasions the viral upper infection in respiratory paves the way for the bacteria to cause severe as well as secondary infection. Such infection in the terminology of doctors is known as superinfection. During this point of time, the opportunist bacteria take full advantage of the situation and invade sinues or sinusitis, ears or otitis or even the lungs or pneumonia. All these symptoms are enough to make the patient alert for the requirement of the antibiotics.
Though antibiotics are not at all useful in curing the cold still many antibiotics are prescribed by the doctors and in most of the cases it is prescribed because of the pressure of the patient. But such antibiotics bring several side affects that are quite severe and can be harmful for the child. Still there are several antibiotics that are totally free from the harmful effects.
There are many types of antibiotics available in the market. However, penicillin is the most common drugs used at the time of the pregnancy. It is sold in market by the several names like cephradine, cefalexin, cefuroxime, cefaclor etc. These commonly used drugs contain the basic amount of cloxacillin, amxycillin, and methicillin. These medicines are considered as the safest drug at the time of pregnancy.
Generally, antibiotics do not cause any harm to the pregnant lady. However, they can also give birth to the serious problem both for the pregnant lady as well as the child present in her, if they are not taken by the consultancy of the doctor.
