American Cities with Obesity

Obesity is now a major health problem in America. This is because about 20% of Americans are obese. Americans in general don’t fancy fat people. According to the American Obesity Association, “people living with obesity” suffer some form of discrimination. But many people don’t agree with the term “people living with obesity” which sounds like “people living with disabilities. The problem of obesity is bigger in some cities than in others.
The following cities could be considered as the American cities with the highest concentration of fat people.
Las Vegas, Nevada
According to Men’s fitness magazine, in 2007 Las Vegas had the highest population of fat people. The reason for this is that people in this city live dangerously inactive lives. In addition to this there are a lot of fast food joints across the city. However the mayor of Las Vegas has launched an initiative to help reduce obesity in the city.
Chicago, Illinois
This city was crowned as the fattest city in America in 2006 by Men’s fitness. Chicago had ranked consistently among the top 5 cities with obesity according the Centre for Disease control, in Atlanta.
Some people refused to accept this because the criteria for the process of selection were modified to include political support. But that support has started coming from Mayor Daley with the launching of the Consortium to Lower Obesity in Chicago Children (CLOCC).
Los Angeles, California
Los Angeles was in the top-five list for two years running. This is due to the fact that it has a population of 4,000,000 with about 8,200 people per square mile. This will make this city appear on many other lists.
To solve the problem, the Mayor of the city has place a moratorium on opening new fast food joints especially in the southern parts where many already exists. Some districts have also banned the sale of sweets to school kids.
The Solution
It is not enough though to start initiatives and expect results. People must be responsible for their health. That is what will reduce obesity in America. People must be encouraged to live healthier lives.
