How would you feel if your parents or grand parents in their old age fail to recognize you or the other family members? Old age is that stage of life when lot of love and care from the near and dear ones is needed, if at this stage people are robbed of their memories and ability to do their task, life will become worst than hell. Any one, even you and me can be attacked by Alzheimer’s disease when one crosses 65. This disease is rapidly eating up the society and it has become the eighth leading cause of death among the old Americans. Though lot of research is being carried out to deal with and cure this disease still, 23,000 people die every year because of this disease in United States.
Alzheimer’s disease causes abnormalities in the brain which causes disruption of the electrical impulses by forming tangles and plagues. In the course of time the messages received by the body from the brain decreases and the person is taken away from himself. Elder and Jacqueline Marcell state that if you start experiencing memory loss, disorientation to time and place, unable to judge, find difficulty in performing normal tasks, mood swings, lack in initiative and experience change in personality, report immediately to the doctor. Although there is no laboratory test to diagnose this deadly disease and is incurable, but you surely need a doctor to slow down its process and to increase the brain’s ability to think, understand and recognize people and objects.
The medication should be seriously followed when this disease has been diagnosed. It will cause many side effects like vomiting, nausea, weight loss, liver damage, laziness, fatigue, urinary tract infections, weight loss etc but the medication should not be stopped because of the fear of side effects. All people suffering from this disease will not follow same treatment as different treatment is given to people with different symptoms. So, a very good doctor should be consulted who can treat the patient after understanding the course of disease.
Vast amount of research is being carried out to find the cure of this disease. And surely there will be a day when the researchers will have the treatment of this deadly disease in their hands.
