All about Diabetes

Diabetes is a disorder of metabolism. Basically, it is a condition that indicates that the amount of glucose has become too high in the blood.
Causes:
Insulin is a hormone produced by pancreas that is required to convert sugar, starches, and other food into energy. When our body does not produce enough insulin or is resistant to insulin, the sugar level in the body rises.
Types of diabetes:
Type 1 diabetes develops when the body is unable to produce any insulin. This kind of diabetics which is the least common usually occurs before the age of 40. Only 5-15% of all diabetic patients have this kind of diabetes. These patients have to take daily injections of insulin to sustain life.
Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body can still produce some insulin but not enough for the body. Most of the people suffering from diabetes (85%-95%) have this kind of diabetics. Its main cause is obesity, and failure to exercise.
Gestational diabetes is the kind of diabetes which occurs during pregnancy in a woman who does not have diabetes.
Symptoms:
Type 1 diabetics might feel increased thirst and frequent urination. They might suffer from weight loss, vomiting and nausea.
Type 2 diabetics might suffer from blurred vision, slow healing infections and experience increased appetite in addition to increased thirst and frequent urination
Health problems:
Diabetic patients need a very special diet because they can develop several health problems such as heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, nerve damage and damage to kidneys and eyes.
Diet for Diabetics:
They should eat more fiber products, more fruits and vegetables and small portion of meat and diary products. It is highly recommended that they should include oats and pulses. Diabetic patients should use more of semi skimmed milk. They should eat more vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, spinach, green beans and tomatoes. They should have more fruits like apple, banana and mango, orange and grapes. They should use artificial sweeteners in their tea and coffee. Brewer yeast is a wonder food which includes traces of chromium minerals. This mineral basically helps pancreas to produce more insulin. Curd is the best anti-diabetic food used to wash pancreas and its waste. Curd help in the production of more insulin and better functioning of pancreas. Garlic is rich in potassium and helps to lower blood sugar. The best remedy is to chew garlic the first thing in the morning. Bengal gram is a valuable anti diabetic food. Bitter ground, a type of vegetables rich in mineral and vitamins helps to improve hyper tension, eye complications and neuritis.
Things to avoid:
Diabetics should avoid white bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, corn, banana, raisin, sweet fruits and vegetables, sugary drinks, pastries, pies, sausages, burgers, lard, butter, cream, peanut butter, cottage cheese, eggs, fish, carrot, cereal, crisps, chapattis, yam and all the other unhealthy starchy food items. Diabetic patients should not have salt on their dining table. Diabetic patients should avoid fried and oily items. They should take less of red meat and poultry products. Diabetic patients should eat les sugar and fat.
