AIDS today is a world wide concern affecting a population of millions. Once stigmatized, the issue has drawn leaders and millionaires like Clinton and Gates to its cause. No wonder “AIDS Sutra: Untold Stories From India” has been a welcome gesture put together by intellectual Indian minds on the eve of International AIDS day.
India with its large population, poverty and conservative attitude towards sex has turned into an AIDS epicenter in the recent years. Highlighting these and such other facts, “AIDS Sutra: Untold Stories From India” renders an intelligent collection of essays. The book has inputs from Kiran Desai, William Dalrymple and Salman Rushdie to name a few. It brings to light the ignorance of the people about the disease and the stigma that a patient goes through. The essays make one wonder if education has really seeped into the masses or if we are still hoping that the trickle down will take its own course. The story is same for all other countries and what complement the spread of the virus are the same: human trafficking and truck routes other than the clinical routes.
However, Dalrymple is quick to note a factor to unique to one of the southern states of India as the cause for the spread of the HIV virus. In “The Daughters of Yellamma,” he skillfully examines the illegal practice of families in Karnataka, where young girls are dedicated to the goddess and sold into prostitution.
While Rushdie on his part narrates the tale of the colorful hijra subculture in India. The writers also point out homosexual activity as one of the prime causes of AIDS and the double stigma an HIV gay goes through.
“AIDS Sutra: Untold Stories From India” reflects the conscious effort made by creative minds towards AIDS education and is refreshingly a compelling read. One of the best collection of essays so far, the book is indeed a collection of stories untold!
