Lip piercing like any other piercing is an invasive procedure which can lead to many infections unless proper aftercare is taken. The first thing to take care is to wash your hands before handling your piercing or cleaning it. You should use warm water to rinse the area and then an antibacterial soap should be applied and area rinsed again. Dry the piercing with a gentle pat using a paper towel. Avoid using a material towel as it can carry bacteria and cause infection. You should refrain from changing or taking out and putting back the jewelry during the first two weeks as the holes are still fresh and infection can take place. So the jewellery should be left in for a minimum of two weeks before it is changed or taken out to allow the skin around the holes to fully heal. The healing time depends upon the procedure done.

An actual lip piercing might swell up more than a labret and take some extra time to heal. It usually takes about two weeks for any kind of lip piercing to heal, although the full recovery takes anywhere between 1-2 months. Avoid using a small stud as it can severe the blood supply to tissue in lip area. Never try to pierce yourself as it can have serious consequences and always have it done by your medical practitioner and get it regularly checked for infection. It is very important to take care of oral piercings as they are vulnerable to septicaemia or blood poisoning and aggravation at the place where the jewellery rubs against gums or teeth.

Precautions and Care:

You should not touch your piercing except while cleaning it.

You should not switch or remove the jewellery during healing.

You should avoid sleeping on your piercing.

You should avoid drinking or taking pain killers before the piercing as this might thin your blood and make you bleed excessively.

You should make sure that your pillows are clean.

You should avoid eating, drinking, or smoking for three hours after the new piercing.

Clean the piercing with an alcohol free mouthwash.
