Adding Texture to Homes
March 2, 2009
Using plain colors in a room makes the room dull and boring. In order to overcome this, it is necessary to create focal points in your home by using patterns and textures and at the same time maintain harmony and synchronization in your home décor.
The choices available for textures and patterns are unlimited. Many times it feels like a Herculean task to choose and arrange them in an inviting manner. Textures and patterns play a major role in deciding the style of decorating the home.
Although a number of choices are available, your environment will limit your choices. Individuals have their own preferences too, that limits the choices. Hence, it is necessary to keep in mind a number of important points for selecting the right texture and pattern or their combinations for your home.
This will facilitate your creating illusions of changed proportion of rooms, climatic conditions and overall mood of the room.
• Your eyes will be kept busy if you use complex multihued patterns and diagonal line criss-crossing lines each other at random. A new life will be introduced in a large area which otherwise will be dull; however this will cause distraction in a small room.
• For low ceiling rooms use vertical stripes that create the illusion of height; do not use this effect in high ceiling room because it makes the room look like a church.
• For narrow rooms add horizontal stripes that will add illusion of width to the room.
• The size and scale of space in the room will decide your choice of pattern. Use large prints for larger areas and small prints for smaller areas.
• You can create a wide-open look by using similar patterns in two or more consecutive rooms. The sense of continuity and flow is broken by contrasting differences and are useful for creation of certain focal areas. The look of a pattern is dependent on the colors used. Use of shades of same color gives a peaceful environment whereas energy and life is added to a room by contrasting colors. These are useful in play areas or gym.
• More light is absorbed by rough texture whereas more light is reflected by smoother texture which gives a sparkling appearance.
• Rustic look is given by the rough texture and it adds a natural feel than the artificial-looking glossy areas. Areas with gloss are smooth and hence easy to clean and these can be used in kitchens and bathrooms.
