Acne Vulgaris

Acne Vulgaris is a facial rash occurring commonly in adolescents. There are many causes for this condition. One of the most common ones is the blockage of pilosebaceous cells by inflammation of surrounding cells.
Clinical conditions
Acne is more prone in areas where the density of sebaceous glands is higher like face and back. The 3 cardinal features are blackheads or open comedones, closed comedones or whiteheads, inflammatory papules and pustules.
Ruptured inflamed lesions lead to nodulocystic lesions and dermal inflammation. These are more likely the cause of scarring on the facial skin. Premenstrual exacerbation of pimples is noticed in some people. Although there is a tendency of instant improvement, acne sometimes can persist into adult life.
Clinical variants
Infantile acne
Pimples are sometimes seen in infants, sometimes it is cystic. Maternal androgens influence is thought to be the main cause and this condition resolves spontaneously.
Steroid acne
Pimples may occur due to corticosteroid therapy (Cushing’s syndrome).
Oil acne
Oil acne is an industrial disease meaning workers with prolonged contact of oils and other hydrocarbons are more prone to this.
Acne fulminans
Acne fulminans is a rare condition that affects male adolescents. Severe lesions appear. It is associated with bone pain due to bone cysts. Crusted acne lesions are seen and associated with pyrexia, malaise and arthralgia and requires urgent treatment with oral prednisolone and analgesics and a course of antibiotics. These conditions require urgent medical attention.
Follicular occlusion triad
Again this is a unique disorder seen in Africans and is characterized by the presence of severe acne. Suggestions are that this condition may be caused by follicular occlusion.
Acne Vulgaris is an inflammatory skin disease which has a pathological process and can occur due to different factors. The skin could be seborrhea or very greasy. It is always advisable to consult a authorized medical practitioner if you find that the condition persists despite clean skin care habits, correction in food habits.
