A Woman’s Best Friend
July 22, 2008
Loyal, loving, playful, protective and amusing to boot, no wonder more and more single women prefer dogs to men! And, the places these small dogs go to, as their owners take them for company when they dine out or hang out at the bar! Chihuahuas, Yorkies or what have you, all spoiled rotten and some even have their own rack of clothes.
Dogs, sleeve dogs, especially diminutive pets have long been an emblem of status since antiquity. Just as today they are toted around in designer bags by the likes of Paris Hilton, Mariah Carey, Tori Spelling and others, in days of yore fashionable women carried them inside the folds of their gowns, the favourites of nobles from Marie Antoinette to Elizabett II, the pretend royalty of Hollywood also seems to favour them.
Flaunted as fashion statements even on the red carpet, there is a worldwide trend towards smaller dogs. The fur-bearing equivalent to a pair of Louboutin pumps or other fashion accessory, these pint sized women’s best friends have their own dog beds, dog toys, dog treats, dog clothes, dog collars, dog tags, you name and these small dogs have it.
Dog breeds like Yorkshire terriers, Cavalier King Charles spaniels, French bulldogs, Papillons are seemingly amongst the most coveted breeds according to dog breeders. More and more older women and single women, including baby boomers whose children have flown the coop are replacing the empty loneliness in their lives with dogs. Dogs which have their own designer dog toys think Vuitton, organic dog food, designer dog clothes think Hermes dog coat, and are toted around in designer handbags.
Treated more and more like family, traveling with small dogs has fast turned into a significant trend with hotels accommodating them as much as possible, which includes pet pillows with special treats placed on them at turndown time. Lap dogs and others are tolerated, if not always welcome, at many offices these days. All this canine-human togetherness can raise eyebrows. Not everyone is amused. It also makes some dog trainers pause. They point out that pets are not accessories, and treating them like prize possessions, no matter how well meaning, can deprive an animal of what it needs. Socialisation, training and exercise are paramount, and overly coddled dog can become territorial and aggressive.
The best of friends, many women including famous women are going in for four-legged friends that can be trained to sit, fetch, roll over and even play dead, rejecting relationships with their own kind. They are not prone to jealous spats, throw them a bone or pat them on the head, and their adoring eyes say they’re yours for life. They make their owners feel secure, have been proven to reduce stress and ensure their owner a long, healthy life. No wonder, it’s so easy to see why a dog really is a woman’s best friend. They also get their owners off the couch and out exercising and meeting people. A survey done on dogs as pets shows that owning dogs benefits hugely, most particularly women.
Walking your dog leads to a greater degree of social interaction in suburbs, conversations on the street or in public places like parks. Dogs can be a real benefit to women, who often report feeling isolated during their stay-at-home child rearing days. Having a dog in the house also helps to increase the self-esteem and development of toddlers and young children.
Dogs benefit both men and women and studies have long shown dog owners to visit the doctor less, have lower risk of cardiovascular disease and recover better from serious illness. That should make you get off the couch from in front of the T.V. and go out and buy the cutest and the best of dog breeds to go for a walk with or exercise in the park!
