9 Bad Eating Habits To Avoid
December 29, 2008
There is one thing that we are sure of and that is that we need to improve our eating habits. The fast lifestyle of present day has made eating to be something of less importance. There are several eating habits that we have formed over the years, which now seem to be normal. However, it is important to get rid of these unhealthy practices.
1. Do not skip breakfast
Time and again you have heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. However, you seem to find no time to have a breakfast. If you eat breakfast, you will start your metabolism early, which will lead to burning more calories during the day. This will also keep you from eating too much at lunch.
Go for a bowl of oatmeal and a cup of low fat yogurt, or a poached egg with whole grain toast and fresh fruit.
2. Do not eat before bed-time.
No studies claim conclusively that eating before going to bed will cause weight gain. However, it will reduce the quality and length of your sleep and it will also slow down the emptying of your stomach leading to heart burn and indigestion.
However, if you just have to eat before going to bed, then go for a healthy fresh fruit snack.
3. Do not binge
Instead of eating two or three large meals per day, it is advisable to eat five or six small meals during the day. Eating smaller meals throughout the day will not only curb your appetite, it will also help you control overeating. Your metabolism will be running throughout the day, burning more calories.
However, eat low fat meals containing lean protein and complex carbohydrates.
4. Do not starve yourself
If you think starving yourself will result in weight loss, you are mistaken, because the first reaction to starvation is weight gain in fat. If you want to lose weight, eat healthy and exercise plenty. Starving yourself will in no way help you lose weight.
5. Do not eat while you are busy doing something else.
This is a very common and prevalent bad habit. Eating food while watching TV will not help you concentrate on your food and hence you will not be able to tell how much you ate. As a result you will not be able to control your food intake and end up overeating.
6. Take time to eat, do not shovel your food in your mouth.
Enjoy your food. Do not do it as a chore and shovel it down your mouth in five or six minutes. Your body needs at least 20 minutes to realise if it is full. So give it time and learn to savour what you are eating.
7. Drink enough water
Drink lots of water during the day. Your body requires water for everything including burning calories. Therefore, if you do not drink enough water, it will tend to gain weight. Drink water with your meal instead of juice or soda. It is a healthier choice and will fill you up.
8. Take enough fruits and vegetables
They are the only source of vitamins and minerals that your body has. Therefore, do not leave them out of your meal.
9. Do not go grocery shopping when you are hungry
While this will not lead to weight gain or anything, it will make you make unhealthy choices. It will lead to impulse purchases and not give you enough time to think over what you are buying for food.
Make a smart choice
Now that you know about the bad eating habits, you can make a smarter choice and avoid them.
