Dry skin makes the skin look dull and unattractive. There may also be scaling of skin, irritation or burning sensation due to the dryness. The skin can be naturally dry or may become dry to many external factors, like exposure to harsh sun, change in climatic conditions, improper diet and so on.
To take care of dry skin, apply a moisturizing lotion and massage it lightly, whenever you feel the dryness or tight feeling. Do not wash your face very frequently as it washes away the minerals present in the skin. Wash your face only twice with a mild soap or face wash. Use a product especially meant for dry skin. You can wash your face 1-2 times just with plain water.
Do not use harsh soaps. Maintain consistency in the soap you use. Do not experiment with new products that come in the market. Wash your face with lukewarm or cold water; and avoid using very hot water. Apply coconut oil or shea butter on the skin atleast 20 minutes before bathing, so that the skin absorbs it. It helps in preventing dryness and makes the skin supple.
You can use lavender extract or olive oil in the bathing water. After bathing, pat the skin dry rather than rubbing it; and apply a moisturizing lotion. While stepping out in the sun, use a sunscreen lotion with mositurising, and UV protection properties. Use an umbrella to protect your skin and hair.
Dryness may be due to lack of certain vitamins or minerals. Eat food rich in vitamin A, C, E and D. They contain properties beneficial for skin care and help in reducing skin ailments. Include green leafy vegetables, proteins, raw vegetables, fruits, nuts, carrots, tomato, lemon and yogurt in your diet. Drink plenty of water.
Avoid intake of caffeine and alcohol.
Apply yogurt every morning for reducing dryness. You can also make a face pack of yogurt, honey and mashed banana. Keep it on for 15-20 minutes and rinse it with lukewarm water.
