Press CTRL +ALT+DEL. As soon as you press the keys a task bar will open up and you can end up the current running programs on it by clicking it and closing it.
Before performing any step makes sure the computer is actually frozen. Num lock trick is the best trick and helps you know about it quickly. You must ensure a minutes time to your computer before it actually shuts down.
Reboot your computer if it freezes
Once you choose to reboot your computer, the entire work that was going on in that particular session at your computer will be lost and you will not be able to recover it back. If you have saved the content, fair enough but you cannot rely on the automatic back up.
Rebooting helps you to gain most of your data but if it were not saved in the session previous to the freeze than the chances of retaining it completely may reduce.
