How to prevent teeth discolouration

tdiDiscolouration of teeth can lead to embarrassment.  It reduces our confidence to interact with people face to face.  We develop a tendency to cover our mouth while we talk or we do not laugh or smile openly.  Discolouration also makes us feel that our oral hygiene may not be good, and gets us worried.

There can be several reasons for staining of teeth.  It could be external reasons like consuming drinks or eatables that cause staining or internal reasons like lack of essential minerals, nutrients or ageing.

To prevent staining, follow top quality dental hygiene.  Brush twice daily.  Use a good quality toothbrush that can reach the interior of the mouth or use an electric brush for thorough cleaning.  Use a herbal toothpaste.  Floss your teeth daily.

Rinse your mouth thoroughly after eating or drinking juice or soft drinks.  Swish the water in the mouth so that food particles from the corner are also removed.  Use an anti bacterial solution, if needed.

Beverages like tea, coffee and other carbonated drinks containing artificial colouring and flavouring agents stain the teeth.  Use a straw to drink so that the contact with teeth is minimum.  Rinse your mouth after drinking.  Do not drink very hot drinks as it may damage the enamel of the teeth.

Chewing tobacco and smoking also causes discolouration of teeth.  Do not eat food items that tend to stick to the teeth; like sweets and chocolates.  Eat hard items like chips or wafers carefully.

Eat raw vegetables like tomato and cucumber or apple fruit.  They are good for oral hygiene, and can reduce plaque from building.

Too much contact with fluoride can cause staining of teeth.  Be careful about the content of fluoride in the tap water.  Use toothpaste that contains little fluoride.

Salt water or water in the swimming pool also causes discolouration.  Take precautions while going to the beach or pool.
