Nothing beats a glass full of lemonade – cool, fresh with the citrus flavor of lemons mellowed by sugar, without being excessively sweet – as the classic summer refresher.
Homemade lemonade is easy to make and tastes a lot better than the store-bought powdered drink mixes. And all it takes is squeezing some lemons, adding a little sugar and water. But how to make the perfect glass of lemonade that tastes right every time? Here are a few simple steps to make a refreshing glass of lemonade in no time at all.
The ingredients that you’ll need to make lemonade at home include 1 large lemon, 1 cup of sugar, 1 cup of water, 16 to 20 oz. cold water, ice, and mint sprig, lemon slice or maraschino cherry for garnishing.
Step 1: To make the sugar syrup, mix 1 cup of sugar and 1 cup of water in a saucepan and heat until the mixture comes to a boil. Remove the mixture from heat, and stir thoroughly so that the sugar dissolves completely. Allow the sugar syrup to cool.
Note: You will only need about 2 tablespoons of sugar syrup per serving of lemonade, but you can make the syrup beforehand and store in the refrigerator for weeks.
Step 2: Mix together the juice of half a lemon, 2 tbsp. of the sugar syrup and 8 to 10 oz. cold water for each serving of lemonade.
Step 3: Serve the lemonade in tall glasses, adding ice and your choice of garnish.
1. You can squeeze about 1/4 to 1/3 cup of juice from one lemon, depending on its size.
2. Make a quick microwave version of lemonade by mixing 2 tablespoons of sugar and 2 tablespoon of water in a tall, microwave-safe glass. Microwave on high for 1 minute; stir to dissolve the sugar, and serve cooled. You can add fresh lemon juice, cold water and ice to the lemonade as well.
