How to Cook Fried Green Tomatoes

tomatoes Known for their firm texture, pleasantly acidic taste and mild tomato flavor, green tomatoes have long been a staple in Southern United States. This versatile vegetable has gained popularity in other parts of the world as well, and is increasingly being used in all sorts of dishes, including pies, relishes, and of course the Southern favorite – fried green tomatoes.

Here’s an easy recipe to make fried green tomatoes at home, which can be used as a side dish or even as part of the breakfast menu.

While shopping for green tomatoes, make sure you buy those tomatoes that are fully matured. Those tomatoes with a fully formed jellylike substance around the seeds, and a reddish tinge about their flesh will taste the best.

The ingredients that you’ll need to make homemade fried green tomatoes include 2 large green tomatoes (about 1 pound), 1/3 cup of cornmeal, butter, ¼ teaspoon salt, and non-stick cooking spray. For seasoning the tomatoes you’ll need freshly ground black pepper, coarse salt, and chipotle cream. This recipe will yield 2-3 servings.

Step 1: Core the tomatoes and then slightly cut off the ends. Now cut the tomatoes into slices. You’ll do well to cut them horizontally, into slices that are at least ¼ -½ inch thick. Set the tomato slices aside.

Step 2: Take the cornmeal and salt on a dish and mix well until thoroughly blended.

Step 3: Roll the tomato slices in the cornmeal mixture, pressing them until they are thickly coated.

Step 4: Heat a large skillet and spray the hot pan with non stick cooking spray. Add a little melted butter. Distribute the butter evenly in the pan, and then put the coated tomatoes in the slkillet.

Step 5: Fry each side of the tomato slices for about 10 minutes or until they turn golden and crisp. If you see the tomatoes sticking to the pan in the meantime, add a little more butter to them.

Step 6: Remove the tomatoes from the heat, and transfer onto a wire rack for cooling. After about 5 minutes, serve the fried green tomatoes warm, seasoned with some black pepper, coarse salt, and chipotle cream on top.
