You don’t need to visit a railway reservation office, which is situated at a distant place, to book your train ticket. You don’t need to stand in long queue to book a ticket. You need to have a computer with Internet facility. You should have either a credit card or debit card of a Bank.
You should have any of the following Identity cards:
Voter identity card
Photo Identity card of Central or State Government
You need to first register on the website http://www.irctc.co.in to avail this facility. Enter http://www.irctc.co.in in the address field of the Internet browser and click on go.
Click on the Signup link.
Enter the following details and click on Submit button to complete one time registration process.

The fields marked with * are mandatory.
Click on Accept terms and conditions to complete signup process.
Log on to www.irctc.co.in using userid and password.
You need to enter the following details:
From * To *
Date * Day Month Year
Ticket Type * i-ticket e-ticket
Enter the originating station name in the ‘From’ field and the destination station name in the ‘TO’ field. Choose the date of travel, class (sleeper, 2nd AC and First AC) and the ticket type. Choose e-ticket option to instantly print the ticket and travel. IRCTC will send the ticket by courier if you choose I-ticket option. Choose Tatkal option if the tickets in the general quota are not available.
Select suitable train from the list of trains. Click on the button Show Availability to know reservation availability. Click on Book Ticket to book your ticket.
You need to enter name, age, sex and berth preference of the passenger in the next screen. Click on Go button. Verify your details, ticket availability and press on the Make Payment option to purchase ticket.
Take a print of the e-ticket after making payment with either credit card or debit card.
You need to carry e-ticket and a valid ID proof.
Unconfirmed waitlist e-tickets are cancelled automatically after the chart preparation. If you book waitlist ticket, make sure that it is confirmed before boarding the train. If you board the train with waitlist e-ticket (unconfirmed), TTE will issue a fresh ticket by collecting full amount.
You can cancel e-tickets after logging on to http://www.irctc.co.in with your userid and password. Click on Cancel e-ticket on the left side. You need to enter the password again to cancel the ticket. Select the ticket for cancellation and click on cancel. You cannot cancel e-ticket at the railway reservation office.
