Swelling is a common occurrence during pregnancy. Most women experience swelling in their feet and ankles. This is normal and nothing to worry about. Swelling in feet and ankles is caused due to extra weight of the foetus and increased pressure on your ankles and feet.
It is generally a temporary condition and it reduces with simple remedies. But, if swelling is spread beyond these areas to your hands and face then you must consult your doctor as it may indicate something serious. Try the below mentioned remedies to reduce swelling during pregnancy.
Ways To Relieve Swelling During Pregnancy
Put Your Feet Up
Avoid sitting or standing for a long period of time in one posture. If you are working in a standing position, then prop one foot on a low stool to shift the weight. Keep changing feet after some time. This will help the feet to relax and improve blood circulation. While sitting on a chair place your feet at a higher level to prevent the blood accumulating in the feet. It will reduce swelling in ankles.
Take Rest in Between Work
Do not work at a stretch and take adequate rest in between work. It will reduce pressure on your feet and ankles and improve blood circulation.
While working on a desk take a break at regular intervals and walk around for 5-10 minutes. While doing household work do not stand for a prolonged period of time, take short breaks in between and lie down with elevated legs to let the blood flow upwards.
Gentle massage stimulates blood circulation and it helps to reduce swelling during pregnancy. Massage your feet and ankle with warm olive oil or pure ghee to relax tired muscles.
Hydrotherapy or water exercises are useful in treating swelling during pregnancy. Join a swimming pool and spend time in the pool. Water helps to support pregnant uterus and reduces swelling.
Wear Comfortable Clothes
Wear comfortable clothes that do not restrict blood circulation. Avoid wearing tight elastics around the legs and abdomen. You can get a variety of maternity wear in the market, chose flowing dresses that do not have elastic on the waist and sleeves to prevent swelling during pregnancy.
Wear Flat and Comfortable Shoes
Tight fitting and high heeled shoes worsen swelling during pregnancy. You should wear flat heeled and comfortable shoes preferably slip on during pregnancy. Slip on shoes let the feet get proper air circulation and are convenient to wear and remove whenever you want to. Opt for rubber soled shoes for more comfort as they are shock absorbing and they prevent pain and swelling in feet.
Drink more Water
Swelling during pregnancy is generally caused by water retention and the best way to reduce it by drinking more water. Drink at least 1-1.5 litres of water every day to improve the function of kidneys. It helps to flush out toxins from the body that may increase swelling.
Light exercise is essential to reduce and prevent swelling during pregnancy. Take a walk for 30 minutes every day. You may walk for 15 minutes twice a day to reduce fatigue.
