It was said by some famous poet that no pain can be bigger than a dental pain. Toothache can be explained as a situation in which any one experiences severe pain in the nerves connecting the teeth, or there is a swelling on the gums. toothache can be due to cavity or other mouth-related disease. This article will explain in detail about the cause, symptoms, and effective and simple ayurvedic treatments/ home remedies for the treatment of toothache. In ayurveda it is known as dant shool.

  1. Causes for Toothache
  2. Diet for Toothache
  3. Symptoms for Toothache
  4. Home Remedies for Toothache

Toothache Causes

Toothache or any other tooth-related problem is really painful and disturbing. It affects our life and our daily activities completely. The main causes of tooth decay are germs in tooth, cavity in tooth, excess consumption of junk foods and sweets and chocolates. Improper brushing, poor quality of toothpaste and toothbrush is also responsible for toothache. Some study shows that stress and mental tension and anxiety worsen the toothache and other problems.

Toothache Diet

No medicine is effective, if the diet we take is not balanced and rich in nutrition. Nutritional food will make your tooth and gums, and mouth bones healthy and strong for lifetime. Always include fresh green leafy vegetables, juicy fruits, cereals, grams, etc., in your diet. Strictly avoid junk foods, spicy foods. Even if you take them occasionally, always brush your teeth after that.

Excess intake of sugar or sweet foods and healthy teeth can never go hand in hand. When we consume sweets or oily snacks, some harmful chemicals are produced in our mouth. These chemicals led to the growth of bacteria in the gums, and with the passage of time these bacteria start attacking gums and result in tooth decay and cavity. Hence, one should always keep a check on the daily sweet intake in his diet. Similarly, do not munch all the time. Eating oily snacks and junk foods will not only affect your teeth, but it has also bad impact on the proper functioning of entire body system.

Apart from all the above mentioned useful home remedies, few things are very important which has always to be taken care of. Always brush your teeth with good quality of toothpaste and toothbrush. Never brush in hurry, do it properly. This not only will keep your teeth clean, but also your teeth and gums healthy.

Home Remedies for Toothache

toothache is quite painful, and it has to be treated carefully. If ignored may effect other teeth as well. It is always good to go for ayurvedic treatment/ home remedies than for chemical-based medicines. Given below are some of the effective home remedies used for the toothache relief.

Laung (Clove):

Clove is one of the most effective medicines for toothache relief. It is simply the best medicine. The clove seeds or clove oil helps in killing bacteria and other microorganisms that cause toothache or other tooth-related problems. Keep 1-2 clove seeds inside your mouth, the clove extract will sooth the affected tooth, and relieves from toothache. Apply clove oil directly to the cavity or keep a small ball of cotton soaked in clove oil, on the cavity. It is also said that clove oil with little black pepper powder when applied over the paining tooth, gives fast relief and the germs do not come again with its frequent use. People suffering from bad breath should keep clove seeds inside their mouth; it will keep the mouth fresh. However, do not keep chewing it frequently, one after another. Do not take any hot or cold fluid during this time. This is one of the best home remedies for toothache.

Asafoetida (Heeng)

Asafoetida or heeng is a good home remedy. It gives fast relief from toothache. Take 3-4 tablespoon of lemon juice and a pinch of heeng to it. Heat it in a low flame and allow it to cool. Take small cotton ball and dip it in the mixture. Keep the soaked ball over the cavity or the paining tooth.

Lemon juice

Lemon juice, lemonade is another effective home remedy for the toothache relief. Fruits like lemon, orange are rich in Vitamin C and hence keep the teeth and gums healthy and strong. People suffering from heavy bleeding from gums, or bad breath should take freshly prepared lime or orange juice. This is one of the important home remedies for toothache.

Pepper (Kaali mirch)

Black pepper or kaali mirch is also useful for the treatment of toothache. Make a paste of 2-3 tablespoon of black pepper and a pinch of salt in few drops of water. Apply this paste over the cavity or paining tooth. Black pepper helps in fighting against bad breath, toothache, bad gums, etc. If this paste is applied at least twice a day, it will keep gums and tooth healthy for life time.

Pyaz (Onion)

It may sound strange, but it is true that onion is also an effective home remedy for toothache relief. Onion helps in killing the bacteria and other microorganism causing toothache and other related disease. Patient with toothache should chew a small onion for 4-5 minutes daily. This will clear off all the germs hidden between teeth and keep the gums fresh. Place a small piece of onion on the decayed tooth for some time. Onion juice will rinse inside the cavity and helps in killing germs and will relieve from toothache. Do this regularly.

Lahsun (Garlic)

Similarly, garlic too is good for the treatment of toothache. Place 2-3 seeds of garlic mixed in salt over the cavity or the paining tooth. Garlic, like onion, helps in killing bacteria and other germs and gives relief from toothache, and poor gums. People suffering from bleeding from gums, or weak tooth should chew 2-3 seeds of garlic early in the morning. This is one of the useful home remedies for toothache.

Sarson (Mustard) oil

Mustard oil also gives fast relief from toothache. It also keeps the gums strong and healthy. Take 3-4 drops of mustard oil and a pinch of salt. Massage your tooth jaws, tooth gently with this paste. This sooths toothache and makes gums and jaws strong. Apply this before going to bed. One of the best home remedies for toothache.

Black pepper worked. I still had some pain so I also tried cold water swish in my mouth....supposedly gases build up when you have tooth issues and the cold water releases them...hence no pain...guess what....IT FRICKIN WORKED!!!! I'm sitting here saving my last two pain pills for tonight, and I might not even need them.

I noticed tht by jst m[@]aging my left side temple area towards hairline tht it relieved my pain. It's bn 7 days I've bn suffering. Dentist says teeth look great!! ENT says I look healthy. Vicodin doesn't seem to knock it out!! Listerine helps but returns to a achey burning itchy pain throughout entire left side!! Top, bottom and jaw area.
I'm scared of black pepper.... It burns my tongue!! How long is this actual relief!? Thnks. California. Female 29.

it is 4 am and awake because of dull aching pain in tooth first site i came across was this one usually when i looked for home remedy i never seem to have the ingredients in the house and it always seems to happen during the middle of the night when no shops are open to buy them

i tried disolvable aspirin first and rinsed my mouth out but that didn't seem to work them i tried the pepper thing because it seemed the easiest and i remember there was some black pepper in my kitchen i never use it i hate spicy things but i was desperate so tried it two tablespoons of black pepper in a cup i think i may have put too much salt and water because it looked like muddy water instead of paste but scraped the clumps off the bottom of the cup and rubbed on teeth my mouth was on fire but pain is gone i can handle a spicy burn in my mouth over a dull aching pain anyday

100% worked for me and work within a minute of applying it and pain free now ten minutes later left the stuff i rubbed on my tooth for about 45 seconds and had to rinse mouth out under tap but still feeling great excellent advice i am saving this page in case it happens again

I started having pain on the evening of Christmas Eve. I tried a strong prescription pain pill that didn't make the pain go away. I tried Motrin and it didn't help. Vanilla Extract and rinsing with salt water was no use. Aleve has been my remedy of choice. I took 2 tablets and the pain eventually went away. Have been taking only Aleve for the last two days and it has proven to take the pain away. Will go to the dentist tomorrow.

#43 - Gunjan - 01/19/2011 - 23:26
I found something that works. Some one wrote that their grandmother said to take an aspirin and let it slowly melt next to the tooth; Allowing the medicine to come directly in contact with the infected tooth and gum, which kills the bacteria and helps to take the pain away. It works!
#44 - Kevin Quinn - 01/25/2011 - 08:51

I have already spent couple of hundreds on consultation and been trying with ointment pot[@]ium nitrate gel.I got little relief but the pain continues and last night almost I did not sleep. Early in the morning I checked up with google found your signt .Now I am trying with cloves and finding the grace of its presence between the teeth. the severity is slowing down and I was asked by the dentinst to have all my teeth capped besides root canaltreatment but she said my teeth were stronger and there were no holes are any thing as such. only sensitivity problem. You will be stunned to know the bill of her fee estimate It was 42 000 plus. I got a stroke almost.
the point I seek to clarify is whether there would be any means of dealing with sensitivity of teeth and gums?

Is the world really this full of trolls? The pepperandsalt thing only hurts more. Doesn't take a genius to figure that out, for those of you not trolling. Placebo is just as good as salt and pepper. I say keep squeezin benzocaine in it and get to a dentist fast:P

Just tried the black pepper an hour ago this morning after being awoken at 5am with throbbing pain..I have a dental plan that covers dental emergencies but when I called at 8am I was told because it\'s Sunday unless I\'m bleeding and go to emergency the soonest I could get in was 3 days from now..I asked the woman what I could do in the meantime and she said they don\'t advertise it but they sell clove oil and colloidal silver over the counter and many pharmacies which used to be and still should be standards in anyone\'s medicine cabinet..she also said there is just one really good thrush medicine I can get a doctor or naturopath here in bc to prescribe which will help prevent future issues called nystatin once the pain is under control
Anyway that\'s what I\'ll do tomorrow and read more while I wait for my emergency appointment but in the meantime I couldn\'t wait for the drugstore to open for the clove oil but I had peppercorns and it was taking too long to grind a tsp so I shoved 6-10 in that side of my mouth between my cheek and gum and by the time I was done mixing grinding and mixing the pain was gone..I also read some stuff on haldi which is used for abscess so I added half tsp of that to the pepper and the heat and swelling on my cheek and ear has almost vanished..
...all I know right now is I\'m gonna try find out if my plan covers ayurvedic practitioners under the 6 naturopath visits because this dude that poted this is a godsend..thank you so much

Pepper and salt with water to make a paste worked. I think I have an infection so I don\'t think anything is going to work that long.
