Sore Throat

Sore throat is a condition in which a person suffers and experiences severe pain in the back portion of the throat. This can be due to viral disease like flu or common cold. This disease mostly attacks children of age 6 to 15 years. Another name of sore throat is tonsillitis. This article will explain in detail about all the various aspects of sore throat, its causes, symptoms, and effective ayurvedic/home remedies.

Sore Throat Causes

Sore throat is quite troubling. The major causes of sore throat include viral diseases like flu and common cold. sore throat can also be due to sinus, other contagious diseases, measles, etc. Severe and continuous vomiting may also cause sore throat and other throat-related problems.

Sore Throat Symptoms

The major symptoms of sore throat include severe acute pain in throat, inflammation, etc. Patient suffering from sore throat may also complain of high fever, body pain, severe cold, etc. Worst part of sore throat is that the neck area swells and become stiff. The back portion of the throat is enlarged and patient finds difficulty in chewing and swallowing anything. Other symptoms of sore throat include headache, stomachache, etc.

Home Remedies for Sore Throat - Sore Throat Treatment

Sore throat is painful and really frustrating. Given below are some of the useful home remedies for sore throat treatment

Bishop Weed (Ajwain):

One of the most common sore throat remedy is bishop weed or ajwain. Patient should take a teaspoon of ajwain, a pinch of salt in a glass of lukewarm water and gargle with it. It is very effective, repeat this twice a day till the problem is completely cured. This is one of the best home remedies for sore throat.

Mehndi leaves:

Quite few people know that mehni leaves are effective in treating sore throat. Add 8-10 leaves in 2 glasses of water. Boil till a glass of water is evaporated. Drain the mixture and allow it to cool such that it becomes tolerable at the time of gargle. Gargle once a day with this mixture until the throat is cured completely.

Tamarind:

It may sound very strange but it is true that tamarind is very good in treating sore throat. Soak a handful of tamarind in 2 glasses of water and keep it for some time. Drain the water and gargle with it. This really works. Similarly, tamarind leaves can also be dried and powdered, and should be mixed in a glass of warm water. Gargle with this for 1-2 times a day till the problem is not over.

Basil (tulsi) leaves:

Basil or tulsi leaves are one of the oldest remedy for curing cough, cold, sore throat, etc. Boil 10-15 basil leaves in a glass of water. Drain the mixture and drink in small sips. Patient may take this drink two to three times a day till the problem is not cured completely. This is one of the useful home remedies for sore throat.

Tea leaves:

Plain tea leaves boiled in water are also good for curing sore throat. Boil tea leaves in water, drain the mixture and drink it in small sips. Patient may also gargle with it.

Bark of mango tree:

It is found that juice extracted from the bark of mango tree is quite effective for the treatment of any kind of throat problem. Patient suffering from sore throat should gargle with lukewarm water containing juice extracted from the bark of mango tree. The recommended ratio is a teaspoon of extract in a glass of lukewarm water.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon is one the best sore throat remedy for the treatment of sore throat, especially the one caused due to cold. Take a glass of lukewarm water and add a teaspoon of black pepper and cinnamon powder into it. Patient should drink this mixture in small sips. One to two teaspoon of honey can also be added into it. This too will sooth the paining throat. This is one of the important home remedies for sore throat.

Fenugreek (methi) seeds

Another quite useful home remedy for treating sore throat is fenugreek or methi seeds. Patient can take methi tea or can also gargle with water containing fenugreek seeds. Take 1 tablespoon of methi seeds in 500 ml of water. Boil the water, after some time water become yellow due to methi seeds. Drain the mixture and allow it to cool till it become lukewarm. Gargle with this solution 2-3 times a day till soreness of throat is recovered completely. One of the useful home remedies for sore throat

Certain herbs like Kantakari or Katli, sage, liquorice or Mulhathi, marjoram, honey suckle are quite helpful in curing sore throat.

Patient suffering from sore throat should also take proper care of the food he takes. Balanced diet is a must; it should mainly include green leafy vegetables, fruits, whole grain wheat, cereals, etc. Patient should also survive on fruit diets. During this period he may only eat raw oranges or orange juice diluted in water. Once the patient starts feeling better, he can start taking other food items like green vegetables, cereals, etc. All this will definitely help in curing sore throat.
