Nasal Congestion

Nasal congestion is a painful condition in which the nasal membranes swell and thus block the passages to nose. The swelling of the nasal membrane is due to the expansion of blood vessels. The expansion of blood vessel can be due to infection caused by germs, pollen grains, and various food items. This disease can attack people of any age; newborn babies are also attacked by nasal congestion. Sometimes this disease becomes so severe in young children that it even causes death. The worst affect of nasal congestion is that patient finds difficulty not only in breathing, but also in speaking, hearing, etc. In fact people suffering from nasal congestion finds difficult in sleeping. Some times it leads to heart attack as the patient is unable to inhale sufficient oxygen through nose. This article will explain every aspect of nasal congestion, its causes and effective home remedies.

Nasal Congestion Causes

Patient suffering from nasal congestion feels extreme irritation and frustration. The main causes of nasal congestion are common cold, flu, sinus. Study has also shown that pregnant women also experiences nasal congestion . Another cause for nasal congestion is hay fever. It is found that people allergic to certain things, smell, etc., cause hay fever or nasal congestion. Some people are allergic to some kind of smell, food items, pollen grains, etc. nasal congestion is one of the consequences of such disease. Among various food items, milk products like processed butter, cheese, ice cream causes food allergy and hence nasal congestion.

Home remedies for Nasal Congestion

Nasal congestion no doubt is troubling and very upsetting. There are plenty of simple ayurvedic treatments for nasal congestion. Given below are some of the common, effective home remedies for this disease.

Carom (ajwain) seeds:

Carom (ajwain) seeds are one of the simplest and effective home remedy for curing nasal congestion. Take few seeds of ajwain, make its powder if possible, or else simply put them in a small cotton cloth and keep near your pillow cover. This is one of the useful home remedies for nasal congestion.

Cardamom seeds:

Patients, especially children, are told to breath in smoke produced by burning 4-5 cardamom seeds on hot coal.

Black pepper:

Black pepper is also one of the best home remedy for treating nasal congestion. Taking 3-4 baked black pepper seeds in the morning, or inhaling fumes by burning them on fire gives fast relief. This is one of the best home remedies for nasal congestion.

Inhalers:

There are several homemade inhalers for curing nasal congestion. Firstly, boil a glass of water and add a pinch of salt to it. Fill it in a clean bacteria-free bottle. Allow it to warm and then with the help of a dropper put 2-3 drops in each nostril by keeping your face upward, facing the sky. This salt solution actually helps in loosening the mucus and other sticky material. Once the solution soaks the nostril and throat, exhale and clean your nose.

One may also add small amount (1 teaspoon) of baking soda into the salt solution. This too helps in loosening the congestion inside the nose.

Other homemade inhalers are, 1-2 drops of peppermint oil on a cotton cloth or cotton ball. Bring it near your nose and inhale, the very essence of peppermint will help relief from sinus, mucus and hence nasal congestion. Similarly, grapefruit juice mixed in lukewarm water can also be used as inhaler. This too is quite effective in treating sinus and hence nasal congestion. This can be best taken while going to bed or early in the morning. This is one of the important home remedies for nasal congestion.

Balanced diet:

As far as diet is concerned balanced diet is must to keep our body free from several chronic diseases. Patient should include plenty of green vegetables and fruits, whole grain wheat, fish is highly recommended. One should strictly avoid high calorie food, excess sugar or salt, etc. Apart from this garlic, tomato soup is quite effective in curing nasal congestion. Take 2-3 tomatoes boil in a cup of water; add a teaspoon of garlic paste, butter and black pepper powder. Add salt for tasty. Take this soup 2-3 times a day. It tastes good and is very helpful.

Horseradish (a type of muli or kanda):

Grate horsedish and take 1-2 teaspoon of it. Add a teaspoon of apple vinegar or honey. Take this mixture slowly on your tongue, and take long breathe. The aroma of this mixture will loosen the congestion and gives fast relief.

Apple extract vinegar:

Apart from mixing it with horseradish paste, another use of apple extract vinegar is that its fume when inhaled also helps in curing nasal congestion. Take 2-3 tablespoon of this vinegar in a pan and heat it until the entire vinegar is exhausted. Inhale the fumes produced at that time.

Apart from this patient should take warm water bath, this makes the body warm and helps in relieving congestion. Similarly, taking hot sips of tea, coffee, milk, etc., help in loosening of the mucus. Patient should not be stressed and live happily, take lots of rest, sleep 7-8 hours. It is also said that taking an extra pillow below your neck also help in loosening the mucus.
