Hangover

Hangover or veisalgia is a condition arises when a person consumes alcohol and other toxic materials in an excess amount. However, one cannot say which amount is excess. For some if a bottle of alcohol is nothing, the same amount can be excess for someone else. hangover as such is not a disease, but person suffering from it feels quite disturbed and sick. This article will explain in detail everything about hangover and in depth about the effective home remedies. According to ayurveda, this condition arises when there is excess of consumption of madd (alcohol).

The major cause of hangover is excess intake of alcohol and other toxic material. Some drugs too cause hangover. Different types of alcohol has different amount of affect.

Hangover Symptoms

The various symptoms of hangover are severe sirshool (headache), angmard (body pain, tiredness, chardi (vomiting) and atisaar (diarrhea), antra shool (problems in intestine), dehydration, ruksh oshth (dry lips) and kanth (throat), red and swollen eyes, restlessness, sleepiness, mild fever.

Home Remedies for Hangover

Hangover is very disturbing. Person suffering from it feels restless and upset and unable to do normal daily activity. Given below are some effective home remedies to overcome hangover.

Water:

Water is the best home remedy to avoid hangover or to get rid of it. The major cause of hangover is dehydration; hence drink lots of water before you drink alcohol. Also take 2-3 glass of water before going to bed.

Lemon:

Prepare a lemon tea for hangover cures. Do not add sugar to it. This lemon-rich tea detoxifies the unwanted material inside the stomach. Assimilate alcohol and gives fast relief from hangover. Fresh lemon juice prepared in cold water with little sugar also helps in fast relief from hangover. This drink controls the sugar level in the blood after excess intake of alcohol. One of the useful home remedies for hangover.

Fruits:

Apples and bananas are very effective fruits for hangover cures. Take an apple in an empty stomach. This will give fast relief. Similarly, mash 1-2 banana and mix in milk. Add a tablespoon of honey to it. This fruit shake do wonders during hangover . It not only will relax the stomach and nerves, the honey will resume the lost sugar in blood. Banana will help in regaining some essential minerals like potassium which is lost due to alcohol.

Adrak (Ginger):

Chew 2-3 small pieces of ginger or take a cup of ginger tea. Ginger gives fast relief from hangover by soothing the stomach and digestion of alcohol. This is one of the best home remedies for hangover.

Bandh gobhi (Cabbage):

Patient suffering from hangover should be given raw cabbage. Chewing raw cabbage will give relief from pain in head caused due to hangover and disturbance in nerves. Cabbage juice taken with tomato juice do wonders for curing hangover as it reduces carve for taking alcohol, and also helps in the metabolic process of assimilating alcohol in the stomach.

Madhu (Honey):

Honey is one of the simplest and easily available home remedy. Patient suffering from hangover should be given 3-4 teaspoon of honey after every one hour. The quantity, however, can be increased if the hangover is acute and severe. Honey has a magical effect in killing the harmful effect of alcohol. Honey also helps in the assimilation of alcohol reached inside the patient’s body. So honey can be used as hangover cure.

Peppermint:

Peppermint is considered as a helpful herb for the treatment of hangover. Patient suffering from hangover may be given 3-5 leaves of peppermint. This can also be given in form of tea by simply boiling 5-10 leaves in a glass of water. This is one of the best home remedies for hangover.

Primrose oil:

Take 2-3 teaspoon full of primrose oil. It has a magical effect in hangover cure.

Tomato:

The sourish taste of tomato has a great effect in curing hangover. The dehydration caused due to hangover can be compensated by taking freshly prepared tomato juice or soup. This will diminish carve for drinking more alcohol. Add freshly prepared lemon juice to it for good taste and fast relief. This is one of the useful home remedies for hangover.

Vitamin B:

Vitamin B has a magical effect in curing hangover. Take food rich in Vitamin B before going to bed. It can also be taken in early morning. This will help in assimilating and digesting alcohol and regain lost energy level. Some Vitamin B rich foods are whole grain wheat, cold milk, and citrus fruits like orange. Similarly, Vitamin C is also very effective for the treatment of hangover.

Exercise:

Exercise proves to be very helpful in getting relief from hangover. Person suffering from hangover should start with mild exercise, brisk walking, and then gradually speeding up. This will help increase the circulation of blood to brain and other parts of the body. Exercise will also regulate the oxygen supply to different parts of the body.

Apart from the above mentioned home remedies, these are some other important suggestion to avoid hangover or to get reed of it. The best practice is do not get yourself addicted to alcohol, even if you are then take it in a small quantity. Eat something (Especially starch containing food as it weakens the affect of alcohol.) during and after you consume alcohol, consuming alcohol in an empty stomach is very dangerous. Avoid carbonated drink as it will increase the assimilation of alcohol in your body. Do not eat any sugar containing fluids while you are consuming alcohol.
