Anemia

Anemia has affected millions of people all over the world. Anemia is a condition in which the red blood cell reduces in the body and thus resulting in lack of iron and hemoglobin. Deficiency of hemoglobin results in poor functioning of the respiratory system, as it carries oxygen from lungs to other body parts. Anemia is a Greek word which means “absence of blood.” Anemia is found in any age group. Children, menstruating women, pregnant ladies all are prone to this disease. Marrow, connective tissues in bones, produces blood cells in the body. However, with the passage of time blood cells are only produced in spine, pelvis, etc. In ayurveda anemia is known as pandu roga.

Types of Anemia

There are different types of anemia. The common cause of anemia is lack of iron deficiency. This lack of iron in the body can be due to unbalanced diet or may be inherited from ancestors. Various types of anemia are:

Anemia due to deficiency of iron

Anemia due to lack of folic acid, Vitamin B12. When stomach somehow becomes unable to secrete useful Vitamin B12, the body experiences lack of iron and blood cells. The symptoms of anemia are not visible quickly; however, people suffering from diabetes, thyroid problems are prone to this type of anemia.

Anemia due to the rupture of blood cells. The rupture can be due to wear and tear of cells, or exposure to toxic material lead, benzene, etc. Sickle cell anemia, thalassemia are two such anemia. It can also be hereditary.

Poor or non-functioning of bone marrow in producing blood cells and hemoglobin. This is common among young children and old people. In this patient suffer from bleeding from nose, tiredness, etc.

Anemia Diagnosis

The diagnosis process changes with patients of different age group as the cause for anemia is different from different people. The very first step is to ask about the patient’s family history. Doctor should look for all the symptoms of anemia. Female patient should tell about their irregular bleeding, if any. Common diagnosis for anemia includes observation of blood color and size of red blood cells. Person suffering from anemia has pale color of blood and small blood cells. The confirmed diagnosis include measuring the level of ferritin, an iron-binding protein, if the level of ferritin is low, person is confirmed to have anemia. This level drops too low in pregnant ladies.

Another way of diagnosis is measuring the iron-binding capacity of blood. Once the diagnosis is confirmed the cause for low ferritin level or weak iron-binding capacity is determined. Patients are asked for stool test, blood in stool indicates internal bleeding, however, in old patients this observation is difficult. Doctors, in that case uses another way of diagnosis called endoscopy. In this optical fiber tube is used to see the internal bleeding. If the result is negative, patients are given iron-rich supplements, if the patients still fails to respond another method is carried out.

How to prevent anemia in infants:

Anemia is caused due to lack of iron in body. The proper intake of iron-rich food, vegetables, etc., by mothers, make their milk the best source of iron for infants, So, mother should feed their infant child at least for one to two years. Infant also should not be given cow milk, as it does not contain appropriate amount of iron in it. Children above 6 months can also be fed with iron and Vitamin C-rich food, however, they should still be fed with mother’s milk.
