Origami Craft originated in Japan soon after paper was invented. This sculptural art form creates intricate objects through paper folding. It begins with a sheet of square paper and then by folding it using basic techniques, the paper is transformed to resemble an animal, person or object.

Since the origami craft is so structured, there are certain ‘Golden Rules’ that you must follow to master this art.

Choose a suitable paper. Copy paper is the most popular choice because it is readily available in a variety of colors. If you use a lighter paper like facial tissues, the creases will not stay because it lacks stability. Using a heavier paper like cardstock will also cause problems as it will not fold upon itself more than once or twice. Origami paper that is specially designed for this craft is also available in the market, but it is a little expensive. You can search for alternatives to this paper like gift wrapping paper or wall posters that are less expensive and are available in various colors and patterns.

Keep the folds clean. The folds should be crisp and exact especially in the corners where there will be more folds.

Practice the craft on a hard surface. It will help you get sharp creases that are very important to make a perfect origami model.

Make use of your thumbnail to get exactness. Running your thumbnail over a clean crease will help you achieve a perfectly flat and smooth surface.

Follow the instructions carefully. Go through the directions thoroughly before starting an origami project and follow them to the letter. Eliminating a step can result in failure. Pay attention to the rules, for instance, after making one fold you must know which way to hold the project to make the next fold.

Practice the craft. First perfect the basic folds and then move on to smaller projects. Once you have mastered these you can try larger projects or design your own origami crafts.

Just follow the rules and have fun!
