SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

Making a family tree is an interesting activity for family reunions and classroom parties. Being simple to create, it makes a perfect craft for children. The tree makes an interesting display for family reunions and holidays. Moreover, the entire family can sit together and contribute to this enjoyable and fun activity. One aim of this craft is to share good quality time with family members and it achieves it well.

Supplies Needed

  • Thick cardstock
  • Glue
  • Pencil
  • A pair of scissors
  • Photographs of each family member
  • Sketch pens, crayons and paints in various colors
  • Thick sheets of paper in different shades of green

Instructions for Making Family Tree

Step 1: Draw a thick trunk and some thick branches of a large tree on cardstock using a pencil. Cut these pieces out.

Step 2: Paint the trunk and the branches of the tree with brown color. Let the paint dry. Then, use a black sketch color to give the effect of a real bark to the tree.

Step 3: Ask each family member to place their hands on the wrong sides of the thick sheets of green paper. Use a pencil to trace their handprints and cut these out. The handprints will be used as leaves of the family tree.

Step 4: Paste the photograph of each family member on their respective handprints. The photograph should be pasted on the green portion of the paper. Use a sketch pen to write the family member’s date of birth under his or her picture. Keep some extra plain handprints aside.

Step 5: Assemble the tree and leaves on a wall. First, the trunk, then the branches and lastly cover all the branches with leaves you made earlier. Place the handprints in such a manner that the wrist is towards the branch.

Step 6: Spread the handprints with pictures on the entire tree and fill up the gaps between them with the plain handprints that you had kept aside.

Step 7: Decorate the tree further with cut outs of birds, monkey, nest and eggs, a tree house etc.
