Handmade Dorm Quilts

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

Handmade dorm quilts are quite simple to make as they require just the basic sewing skills. If you enjoy quilting you can complete this project by yourself, otherwise you can just make a fancy quilt cover and the get the quilting done from professionals. These quilts make a very practical gift idea for college going students. You can customize the quilt for them by embroidering their names on it.

Supplies Needed

  • Fabric in various colors and shades to make the top of the quilt
  • Fabric for making quilt lining
  • Embroidery threads
  • Thread to sew
  • Needle
  • Scissors

Instructions

Step 1: Cut colorful square pieces from the fabric. They should be 8 inches wide and 8 inches long. To make a decent sized quilt use 5 squares for the width and 7 squares for the length.

Step 2: Arrange these squares in a pattern of your choice, so the color combination looks attractive.

Step 3: Place these squares with the wrong side up and sew their edges together.

Step 4: Once the top is stitched, embroider the student’s name on it along with his\her college year. If you are good at painting, you can use fabric colors to paint some design on the quilt. If you wish to go that extra mile in making it even more unique, get a photograph of the student scanned and printed one of the square pieces of fabric. Then place that piece right in the centre of the quilt.

Step 5: Now that the top side of the quilt is done. Take a fabric to match the size of the top and sew the edges of the top side and the lining with the wrong sides together. Remember to stitch only 3 edges together. Attach a zipper on the fourth side, to make the quilt cover washable.

Step 6: Now, give this cover to the professionals for quilting.

Your personalized homemade dorm quilt is ready to be gifted. College grads will love the quilt. Trust me! Also read about following :
