The origin of candles dates back to 3000 B.C. when the Egyptians used them for the first time for lighting purposes. In modern times of course candles are used more for decoration and less for lighting purposes. Handmade candles are extremely simple to make and can be used on a variety of occasions like festivals, candle light dinner, Valentines Day, birthdays or a simple dinner party at home. Adding some fragrance to these handmade candles enhances their splendor.
Supplies required for making Handmade Candles
- Double Boiler
- Stove or Burner for heating
- Paraffin Wax
- Candle color dyes or wax crayons
- Candle thermometer
- A bowl of cold water
- Fragrance oils or concentrated scents (without alcohol or water base)
- Braided cotton wick
- Wooden spoon for stirring wax
Procedure
Step 1: Place a pan half-filled with water on a medium flame and bring the water to boil. Now place a coffee can in the water. This will act as a double boiler.
Step 2: Put small pieces of paraffin wax in the coffee can, so they can melt quickly. Keep stirring the wax until it reaches a temperature of 160 F and melts completely. Now turn down the heat to minimum so the water stays warm and wax remains in the molten form.
Step 3: Add the desired color to the wax. Remember that wax lightens in color once it cools; therefore test the shade by allowing a spoonful of wax to cool down. At this stage you can add a little oil or scent if you desire. Now keep stirring the mixture and bring the temperature to 160F.
Step 4: Take a wick, its length should be slightly more than that of the desired candle. Now dip it in the melted wax. Keep the wick dipped in the wax for a few seconds and then take it out and allow it to cool for a minute. Repeat this process of dipping and cooling. To quicken the cooling process, dip the candle in a bowl of cold water.
Step 5: When the candle reaches desired thickness level roll it over a smooth surface to remove any lumps. Heat the wax to 182F and dip the candle in it one last time for a few seconds.
Step 6: Spruce up the bottom of the candle to give it a neat and straight edge. Keep it aside to dry.
