Making box towns is a fun activity that can be used as part of a science model or an art and craft display. Children can easily take up this craft and it advances their power of observation, imagination and creativity. You can make a box town for children if they are too small to make one by themselves and let them enjoy playing with it for hours.
You can use the cartons to make various structures like houses, parks, school, fire station, church etc. First take paper milk or juice cartons and paint them with white Gesso paint and then ask the kids to paint them to look like a school or a fire station.
Take an old box and cut out doors and windows to give it the shape of a house. Cover it with colored paper. Decorate the houses with windows, doors and flower boxes.
Use tissue paper tubes to make chimneys for house or factories. You can cut out a colored paper and add it to the chimney to depict smoke.
Add greenery to your town by making trees. Use a tissue paper tube for the tree trunk. Draw cloud shapes on green paper to make the leaf canopy. Cut them out and stick them on the tree trunk with tape. You can paint flowers and fruits on this canopy to make the trees more attractive.
Take a poster board to make the base of your town. Map out where you want to place the various buildings that you have created in your box town. Use felt pens to color roads and rivers on it. Add a few traffic signals on the road and some paper boats to the river. Then use glue or tape to stick all these objects on the board.
You can also add plastic farm animals to the barn yard you have created and place plastic cars on the roads.
With a little creativity you can turn trash into a most exquisite box town for children. Sounds fun, doesn’t it?
