Bird bank for kids literally turns trash into treasure as it is totally made from waste materials. It is a perfect craft for older children as it needs a little skill that younger children normally don’t possess. Once made a bird bank not only looks beautiful but also encourages the habit of saving money among children. Children can store money in this bank through the slit at the top and can retrieve it whenever in need by opening the lid just behind the bird’s tail.
You will need cereal box card, a small empty plastic milk bottle, newspapers, paint, paint brush, scissors, glue, sharp knife, sticky tape and a tissue paper or kitchen roll.
Cut a slit, long and wide enough to let through the largest coin, on one side of the milk bottle.
The end with the lid will make the tail and the bottom of the bottle will make the head of the bird.
Place the bottle flat on a table. Crumple newspaper into two pillows a little larger than the sides of the bottle and stick one on either side. Keep the money lid and slit uncovered.
Fold a little newspaper underneath the bottle to make a padded stomach of the bird. Make a very small newspaper pillow to make the breast of the bird and stick it well.
Cut out two newspaper pads in the shape of bird’s wings and stick them on either side.
Cut cereal box strips to make the tail of the bird. Tape it at an angle to the body well, ensuring that it does not cover the lid of the bottle.
Cut a semicircle out of the cereal box and fold it into a cone to make the neck of the bird.
Make one large and two small newspaper balls for the head and eyes of the bird. Make a small cone from cereal box strips to make the bird’s beak. Stick all these in place.
Attach the birds thighs, legs and feet made out of newspaper and cereal box card respectively, to the bird’s body.
Use PVA Glue mixed in equal parts with water to stick tissue paper all over the bird’s body and let it dry. Keep the money slit uncovered. Paint the bird in desired colors.
