Every room must be decorated with three things in mind: the harmony of the decoration ideas in that room so that a perfect aesthetic and visual balance is created; its uses and functionality; and the mood, energy level and vibrancy desired by you for that room.
All the design aspects of the room while decorating are to be decided upon and judged according to these three things. Everything in the room, including the style followed, the furniture, the design of cabinets and storage areas, and the seating arrangement and layout in the room, must follow these things.
An example of the design and décor of a particular room can be used to illustrate this. Consider a master bedroom. The functionalities determined are that it should be a quiet sanctuary for sleep and complete relaxation, an area comfortable for reading, and should also be romantic for couples.
These functionalities can be achieved in the following way. There should be a window or windows to provide good ventilation and natural light, some lamps at the bedside to facilitate you to read in bed, and bookshelves to keep books and family photos.
Also, a bench, hope chest, or low dresser near the foot of the cot or bed adds style and is also very functional.
The mood in the room should be modern, restful and demure. Things that help to achieve the right mood are: a headboard of leather in a dark color, the use of simple neutral colors for a relaxed mood, and a carpet of plain sisal in a vibrant color to brighten the room.
To arrive at harmony, avoid all useless products and clutter. Neutral colors make a room look restful and demure, and also work as the factor that unifies the décor. Bright colors like green and red can be used for accents to give a dramatic flourish, but these must be subdued to such a level that the harmony is not disrupted. Furnishings can be classic or contemporary according to your personal taste.
