Nobody likes to hear they have rules to follow, especially when they are moving away from home and into college for the first time. Unfortunately, rules are a necessary part of life, and living in a college dorm is no exception. There may be a lot of fun and helpful appliances/decorations you would like to have in your dorm, but not everything will be allowed. Here are some basic rules, that most colleges have, regarding dorm decor. Of course, every college is different and therefore, some rules may not apply everywhere, but these are the most common ones.
Usually students are expected to clean their rooms and maintain décor but if the students violate this rule by littering and keeping their rooms untidy then penalties may be imposed as per the rules. So it's definitely a wise idea to make sure your friends don't get out of control, when visiting your dorm, because you may find yourself in trouble for other people's wreck less behavior.
College provided furniture should never be removed from the specific dorm room or other social areas. So just leave it in the room that it belongs in, and don't take it anywhere else! Some colleges provide furniture, while some may not. In regard to carpets, be careful not to spill anything that may stain them. It's probably a wise idea to bring your own rugs and place them on the floors, to avoid this. Also, the use of decals and contact paper typically shouldn't be used with walls, doors, windows, ceilings, and any other college dorm room furnishings. Many colleges don't allow the use of candles or certain types of lamps either, because of possible fire hazards.
These are just a few of the many rules that most colleges require students to follow in their dorms. Always remember, if you have any questions about whether or not to modify or add some type of furniture or decoration to your dorm, always consult with the college first. Don't take the risk of getting yourself into trouble. College is already expense enough and you don't want to pay any additional fines for something that can easily be avoided!
