Cabinet refacing has changed a lot in the past few years; probably much more than you realize. Many years ago only the professionals did the cabinet refacing; whereas now you can do it yourself if you really choose to. This is not that hard of a project to do if you are well prepared for the job by having everything that you need together beforehand; including some easy to follow instructions and the tools you will need, then it should be pretty easy to re-face your cabinets.
Why cabinet refacing?
Why not just get all new cabinets if you are aiming to change the look and décor of your kitchen? The simplest answer is that cabinet refacing is not only cheaper than buying all new cabinets; it is also a way to redecorate without completely tearing your entire kitchen apart in the process. This process is also the way to change the color of your cabinets without having to replace the entire cabinet. Another good reason to choose cabinet refacing over brand new cabinets has to do with the condition of the cabinet frames. If the frames of your cabinets are in good condition, but the doors are bad or the wood is warped on the doors; it is better to simply reface the cabinets then to replace the entire set of cabinets. If all you want to do is change how your cabinets look by changing the exterior colors; then cabinet refacing is just what you want.
Exactly what is involved in cabinet refacing?
Refacing a cabinet simply involves taking off the doors and cabinet knobs and hinges. Then you simply need to sand down the existing surface to make it a little rough so that the adhesive has something to stick to so that you can attach the new veneer. The veneer is what changes the color and thus the appearance of your cabinets. If the door itself is still good, simply sand down the door and put the new veneer and possibly new moldings on the door. Once you have down all of this, you may need to change the hinges. If you choose to change to the door knobs, this is the time to make those changes too. Putting the cabinet knobs back on is the last thing you do.
