More and more building cabinet frames and others parts of today’s cabinets is done by machines in huge automated factories, but you can still find the small one or two person operations who are still building cabinet frames, doors and drawers by hand. Though these craftsman are becoming few and far between, you can still find a good custom cabinet maker if you look around enough. There are still people who prefer to have their cabinets hand made by someone who know what building cabinet frames and cabinets as a whole involves.
What types of wood are good?
If you are having your cabinets’ custom built then you might be asking what types/kinds of wood will the cabinet maker use to build your new cabinets. There are four main types of woods that are the preferred choices when you are building cabinet frames and the rest of the cabinet too: Cherry, Maple, Northern Red Oak and Pine. The first three are hard woods that are very durable and will stand up to quite a bit of pounding, daily wear and tear and abuse very nicely. Pine is a soft wood that is also very durable, but chosen because of the fact that it can be stained very easily and will hold the stain perfectly for many years to come. Any of the four of these woods are an excellent choice for your cabinets. If you want a wood with a deep rich color before staining, then you might choose Cherry or Northern Red Oak.
What colors are good to stain these Cabinets?
The very last step when building cabinet frames and cabinets as a whole is to choose the shade of stain that you will use to finish this job. If you are using Cherry or Northern Red Oak you might go with a very light cherry stain; something to accentuate the beauty of the wood that is already there, or just a clear coat of varnish. When using Maple and Pine there is no limit to the shades of stain that can be used; just what the customers wants. The other option that is always there is to use only polyurethane to seal and protect the wood.
