It is found throughout India.

It has an annual shrub that has a height of 2 to 4 feet. The whole plant is of purple color. Leaves are 1 to 2 ½ inch long, oval in shape and are dentate. It has a bud at the apex of the petiole. Flowers are small and are of purple color. These are present in the presentation that is 6 to 8 inch in length. Seeds are oval and are flattened and shiny having brown color and bears black spots on them. Flowers and fruits bloom in winters.

The plant has 2 categories. According to the color of the leaves:-

  1. shayam tulsi (black tulsi)
  2. shwet tulsi (tulsi)

Chemical Constituents


The leaves and flowers contain a volatile oil 0.1 to 0.23 %. It contains fenile 45 to 73 % and aldehydes 15 to 25 %. Seeds contain stable oil 17.8 %. Besides this the plant contains alkaloid, glycosides and tannins. Leaves possess ascorbic acid and carotene.

  • Gunna (properties) – laghu (light) and ruksh (dry)
  • Rasa (taste) –katu (pungent) and tickta (bitter)
  • Virya (potency) – ushan (hot)
  • Prabhav (action) – krimighan (anti wormal)
