Morphology

 

It is a small shrub that attains a height of 5 to 6 feet. It is an aromatous plant. Leaves are parted and the apicular leaflets are just like a line. Flowers are small, yellow and are conjoint fruits are ovate in shape and are 6 to 7 mm long. They are strait or bit curved. It has a color that varies from green to yellowish green. It has five sky blue colored lines on it.

According to ayurveda there are two varieties.

  • Vanya (wild)
  • Gramya (cultivated)

Chemical Constituents

 

Seeds contain 0.7 to 1.2 % volatile oil. It also contains anethole which is 50 to 60 %. Stable oil is present about 9 to 13 %.

Pharmacology

 

It is vata and pitta suppressant. It is a great eye tonic and strengthens the nervous system. It also provides strength to brain and improves the working. It improves the absorption of water in the body. . it helps in normalizing the peristaltic movements in the body. It regularizes the digestive activities. It supports the cardiovascular system for proper functioning. It helps in cleaning any interrupting in the channels of the body especially if respiratory tract. It helps in suppressing pain and also reduces the inflammation. It helps in increasing the milk secretion in lactating mothers and it also works as aphrodisiac agent. It increases the sweat secretion there fore helps in lowering the raised body temperature. It also curbs the burning sensation and reduces the skin related problems due to its cool nature in the body. It also provides strength to the body.

According to ayurveda it contains

  • Gunna (properties) – laghu (light) and snigdh (slimy)
  • Rasa (taste) –madhur (sweet), katu (pungent) and tickt (bitter)
  • Virya (potency) – sheet (cold)
