It is found throughout India.

Morphology

 

It has a big tree. The old trees have shattered bark and are of white or brown in color. Leaves are shiny, thin and bear 5 to 7 veins. Fruits are small and are about ½ inch in diameter similar to that of eye pupil. It is circular in shape, compressed. When they are raw it is of green color and when it is ripe then it turns black in color. The tree fruits in summers and gets ripened by rainy season.

Chemical Constituents

 

Bark contains 4 % tannins. Besides this it contains certain alkaloids and mineral and certain vitamins.

Pharmacology

 

It is kapha and pitta suppressant. It helps in improving the skin texture. It suppresses pain and also reduces the inflammation. It is also being used in piles, wounds and gastic troubles. It regularizes the digestive system. It also helps in curbing pain and reduces the effect of arthritis. It is a aphrodisiac agent and also tones up the uterus. It also helps in controlling the hyperacidity. It prevents urine related problems

According to ayurveda it contains

  • Gunna (properties) – guru (heavy) and ruksh (dry)
  • Rasa (taste) – kashaya (astringent) and madhur (sweet)
  • Virya (potency) – sheet (cold)
