It is generally found on the high altitude areas like Kashmir, Himalayan region, Nepal and Sikkim.

Morphology

 

It is a perennial shrub that attains a height of 5 to 8 feet. Leaves are parted and dentate. The apicular leaves are small and the bottom leaves are larger. There are channels in the stem. Flowers are small and of yellow color. Fruit is 1/3 inch long and ¼ inch broad. Roots are thick and branched. The extract from the root is known as hing.

Chemical Constituents

 

It contains resins 40 to 64 %. Volatile oil 10 to 17 % and ash 1.5 to 10 %. Resin mostly contains asaresinotannol and ferulic acid. It also contains disulphide that imparts it the peculiar smell

Pharmacology

 

It is vata and kapha suppressant. It is very effective in normalizing the digestion and also facilitates easy peristaltic movements and passage of air. It stimulates nervous system and also and improves working of brain. It cleans up the respiratory tract and works as antitusive. It is very beneficial in chronic ailments. It helps in curbing menstrual disturbances and also it works in impotence. It also improves the general health condition.

According to ayurveda it contains

  • Gunna (properties) – laghu (light), snigdh (slimy) and tikshan (sharp)
  • Rasa (taste) – katu (pungent)
  • Virya (potency) – ushan (hot)
