Habitat

 

It is found in areas like Orrisa, Chota-Nagpur, Bengal in India and areas like Bangladesh, Burma and eastern Asian countries.

Morphology

 

It is a perennial shrub that attains a height of 2 to 3 feet. Leaves are 2 to 4 feet long and 3 to 4 inch in width. These are of green color. Flowers are arising from the center of the shrub and are 1 foot in length and 1 inch broad. Fruit are broad and roundish having a diameter of 2 to 2 ½ inch in diameter. The skin of the fruit bears about 25 stripes. Seeds are angular and are 12 in number.

Chemical Constituents

  • Rasa (taste) – madhur (sweet) and tickt (bitter)
  • Virya (potency) – ushan (hot)
