Habitat

 

It is generally found in places that are not that fertile and has a rocky soil. It is generally found in areas that have the temperate climates and are more commonly seen in planes in the northern and central parts of Asia including Pakistan and northern Indian region.

Morphology

 

It has a perennial shrub and a length of 4 to 12 inch and has a woody stem. Leaves are ½ to 1.5 inch in length having good veinous network Flower is white to light pink in texture and very much resembles the sea shells (shankh) in appearance hence found its Sanskrit name is shankh pushpi. The flower is divided into 1 to 3 parts. Fruit is oval inshape.0.17 to 0.2 inch in length. The plant fruits and flowers in winters and spring seasons respectively.

Chemical Constituents

 

It contains certain alkaloids, convolmine, conoline, phyllabine, confoline, convoline, convosine and convolvidine with sterols like beta- sitosterl nas scopoline. It also contains alkaloid shank pushpin which is considered to be the active ingredient in the the herb.

Pharmacology

 

It is vata and pita suppressant. It is a wonderful remedy for hair related problems. It is an excellent brain tonic and provides strength to the nervous system. It also is helpful in conditions like insomnia. It also acts as appetizer and promotes better digestive actions. It provides strength to the heart and prevents thinning of blood. It also very effective in hypertension and relieves undue pressure on the arteries. It is also helpful in throat related problems and also expels the unwanted mucus present in the throat. It also act as diuretic and is helpful in conditions like urinary tract infections and urinary calculi. It is also used as aphrodisiac agent. It also reduces the burning sensations in the body. It tones up the body and also relieves from general body weakness.

According to ayurveda it contains

Gunna (properties) - snigdh (cutousness ) and pichil (slimy)

Rasa (taste) - tickt (bitter)

Virya (potency) – sheet (cold)

Prabhav (effect) – medhya (brain tonic)

Uses

 
  1. Paste- it is used in applying on the scalp for maintaining good growth of hairs besides this it provides relief from mental fatigue. It is also used for application on the skin diseases.

  1. Cold decoction- it is used in preparing the cold decoctions and is used in various aliments like mental weakness, convulsions, paralysis, insomnia, hememesesis, gastric disorders, heart related problems, high blood pressure, poisoning, skin related disorders. It is also effective in urinary disorders and diseases like gonorrhea and syphilis

  1. Oil- it is used in applying on scalp for hairs related problems.
