Habitat

 

This plant is found in the areas that bears harsh and rough climates. It is more commonly seen in Rocky Mountains and unfertile soils. It is found in countries like Middle East, Africa, Pakistan including Baluchistan and Afghanistan. In India it grows in areas of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Orissa.

Morphology

 

It has a small tree or a small creeper having a height of 4 to 6 foot in height. It is branched and is thorny. Leaves are small like that of neem and are serrate, obovate, 1 to 5 centimeter length and 0.5 to 2.5 centimeters broad. Plant is dimorphic and is bisexual. Flowers are of red color or sometimes pink in color. Fruits are pulpy and are ovate in shape. The juice is thick and is aromatous. It is inflammable and melts in sun. when it is immersed in warm water it attains white color just like milk.

According to ayurveda five types of guggulu are there. These are:-

  • Krishan (black)
  • Neel (blue)
  • Kapish (light brown)
  • Rakt (blood red)
  • Peet varn (yellow)

Only krishan (black) and peet varn (yellow) are fit for human consumption. According to Unani system of medicine thses ae also of five types and is just Other Names to the above mentioned verities.

These are:-

  • Mulke ajark- rakt guggulu
  • Mulke yahud- peet guggulu
  • Mulke saklavi- kapish guggulu
  • Mulke arabi – raktab guggulu
  • Mulke hind – krishan gugglu

Chemical Constituents

 

It contains an oleogum resin that contains myrcene, dimyrcene and polymyrcene. As per constituents it has 6.9 % moisture, 0.6 % volatile oil, resin 61 %, gum 29.6 %, and insoluble substances 3.2 %. Besides all these it also contains certain alkaloids in low amounts.

Pharmacology

 

It is vata and kapha suppressant and is very widely used in the diseases caused by vata. It is also a good anti obesity agent. It is good pain reliever and also acts on inflammation. It also promotes wound healing and is very effective vermicide. Guggulu strengthens the nervous system. It also promotes digestion and is good for liver functioning. It is also anti hemorrhoidal in action. It is also a good vasodilator and prevents any kind of infecting happening in body. It also acts on the urinary system and thus helps in dysurea and renal calculi. It also acts as aphrodisiac agent and also helps in relieving from menstrual disturbances. It provides strength to the body tissues and helps in recovering from weakness. It is also effective in skin related problems.

According to ayurveda it contains

Navin (new) gugglu

  • Gunna (properties) - laghu (light), ruksh (rough), suksham (peneterating)
  • Rasa (taste) - katu (pungent) and tickt (bitter)
  • Virya (potency) - ushana (hot)

Puran (old guggulu)

  • Gunna (properties) – snigdh (slimy) and pichil
  • Rasa (taste) - katu (pungent) and tickt (bitter)
  • Virya (potency) - ushana (hot)

Toxicology

 

It has no toxic effect on human body. If it is consumed in large amount it causes veroius effects like cataract, inflammation in mouth, weakness, unconsciousness and nausea.

Uses

 

Vati (tablets) – it is used in preparing tablets as it has a gummy texture and helps in binding up of the other constituents. By itself alone it is used in decreasing cholesterol levels in the body, it is a very good pain killer and also a good anti-inflammatory agent.
