Habitat

It is found in area which has a height of about 4000 foot. It is found in tropical region. In India it can be seen growing every where. It is found in wild and also in cultivated lands. It is found in temperate region having a temperature ranging from 16 to 29 degree centigrade. It also needs lots of water to grow.

Morphology

 

It has a small tree that reaches a maximum of 10 to 15 feet in height. The stem is usually thorny. Leaves are green having shine and are oval shaped. Flowers are also oval in shape and are of white color having violet streaks from inside. Fruit is ovoid in shape and has a pointed tip at one end. They have thick covering over it. When fruit is unripe it is hard, dark green and non juicy but on ripening it turns to bright yellow, becomes soft and juicy.

Chemical Constituents

 

It contains good amount of citric acid. It contains 3.7 % citric acid. It contains certain amount of volatile oil (2.5 %). It contains limoneme 70%, α-terpinene, α-pinene, β-pinene and citral. It also contains certain bio-flavanoids, certain vitamins like vitamin A, thiamine, riboplavin, niacin and vitamin C.

Pharmacology

 

It is kapha and vata suppressant and pitta aggravator. It is very much helpful in indigestion. It regulates all the digestive tract and improves digestion. It also helps in secretion of digestive enzymes. It is also a good heart muscle toner. It also improves taste of the mouth. It increases appetite. It also stimulates liver for proper secretion. It is very good remedy in nausea. . It improves circulation of the blood and is helpful in conditions like atherosclerosis.

According to ayurveda it contains

  • Gunna (properties) – guru (heavy), tikshan (sharp)
  • Rasa (taste) – amal (sour)
  • Virya (potency) – ushan (hot)

  • Decoction- it is also helpful in the digestive activities and wormal infestation. It also strengthens heart muscles and helps in improving the respiratory conditions like asthma and cough. Anti depressive actions have also been seen in regular consumption of lemon.
