Morphology

 

It is a creeper that coils around the trees or may spread on the ground waywardly. Leaves are about 1 to 4 inch in length having a diameter of about 1 to 3 inch. It has veins that are 5 to 7 in number. It is of light green in color. Flowers are bisexual, with yellow to white in color.

Chemical Constituents

 

Its roots contain pelosine and bebeerines that are present in about 0.5 to 1 %. Besides these it contains seponine and cycleine.

Pharmacology

 

It is kapha and pitta suppressant. It is very effective in treating skin related ailments. It also helps in healing the wounds faster. It is a good agent to prevent indigestion. It is widely used in loose stools and loss of appetite. It also is a good remedy to prevent worm infestation. It is a good blood purifier and acts as anti-inflammatory agent. It increases the amount of urine secretion. It also stimulates kidneys for proper functioning. It also brings down the abnormally raised body temperature. Burning sensation is also reduced by it.

According to ayurveda it contains

  • Gunna (properties) - laghu (light), tikshan (sharp)
  • Rasa (taste) – tickt (bitter)
  • Virya (potency) – ushan (hot)

  1. Powder- it is used in skin ailment as it purifies blood and also reduces itching, it is also bactericidal hence it helps in reducing the infection caused. It is also applied on the wounds so make it heal faster and to avoid any kind of infection. It is also effective in digestive tract related problems like indigestion, diarrhea and dysentery. It is also effective in respiratory tract related problems

  2. Decoction- it is used dysurea and urinary tract related problems. It is also effective in diabetes.
